WARRIOR DIVISION TOYS FOR TOTS

By Maggie Culver

The 2011 Toys 4 Tots season was taken very seriously by the US Navy Sea Cadet Corps Warrior Division out of Douglasville, GA. This was their biggest haul yet. The Warrior Division and their families all gathered at the Three Dollar Cafe in Douglasville, GA for their annual Holiday Dinner and to turn in their Toys. Each cadet didn't just bring one toy each... they brought in multiple toys each.

SN Riley Baughman (from North Paulding High School) commented that he was doing this ... "because military does so much for us by going and fighting for our freedom and the people are really appreciate it... well this is our way of giving back to them and showing how appreciative the military is of everyone's support."

Another cadet, LC1 Kaitlyn Jones (from Temple, GA) was over heard commenting that the reason why he brought so much was "because everyone has been struggling with money and he wanted to help out those who are less fortunate."

The Parade was led by the Honor Color Guard from US Navy Sea Cadet Warrior Division stationed in Douglasville. Heading the Color Guard and carrying the National Ensign is Color Guard Squad Leader SA Riley Baughman from North Paulding High School, carrying the unit's flag is SA Melissa Sturgeon from North Paulding High School, the rifle bearers are PO2 Justin Banks from North Paulding High School and SR Brant James from Alexander High School.

The Warrior Division also shared a float with the American Legion Post 145 which carried some of the American Legion's veterans and the rest of our unit. Also, the local Douglasville garden club carried 48 roses for 48 Douglas County citizens killed in action for this country’s freedom, including friends of Vietnam veteran Barry Gongaware.

Parade participants said, as far as they know, the night time Veterans Day parade is the only one of its' kind in the country.

Naval Sea Cadets Honored at City Council Meeting

Seventeen proud Naval Sea Cadets and their Commanding Officer, LTJG Eric Farland, attended the September 12th McDonough City Council meeting to be honored by Mayor Billy Copeland and Council with a Proclamation that was read aloud by Mayor Copeland.

In the Proclamation, the Mayor recognized the month of September’s national designation as “United States Naval Sea Cadet Corps Month.” The Mayor then proclaimed the month of September, 2011, to be NAVAL SEA CADET CORPS MONTH in the City of McDonough to support and recognize the contributions of this program.

Mayor Copeland presented the Proclamation to LTJG Farland who accepted on behalf of the 1124th Construction Battalion United States Naval Sea Cadet Corps.

Since 1958, the Naval Sea Cadet Corps has been committed to providing American youth with a drug and alcohol free environment in which to develop their leadership abilities, broaden their horizons through hands-on training, and guide them towards becoming mature young adults.

The United States Sea Cadet Corps 1124th Construction Battalion started 7 years ago in Griffin under the Command of LTJG William Dempsey. Ensign Eric Farland was the Training/Operations Officer at that time.

In August, 2010, the Battalion moved to McDonough with 9 Cadets, and in January, 2011, LTJG Eric Farland assumed Command of the unit. As of August, 2011, there are 42 Cadets in this Corps ranging in ages 11 to 17.

This unit currently has one Cadet in the Navy Seal program, another is at the Naval Academy, and one has joined the Marines.

The Council took time, during the meeting, to personally congratulate these young cadets on their commitment to service and discipline as they grow into strong young men and women.
