David, a native of Augusta, Georgia, attended the Georgia Institute of Technology on a Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps scholarship where he graduated in June 1979, with a Bachelors degree in Nuclear Engineering. Following commissioning he served at sea on USS GRAYLING (SSN 646), USS DANIEL BOONE (SSBN 629) (GOLD), USS BATFISH (SSN 681), and as Executive Officer on USS ALBANY (SSN 753). David also served on the staff of Commander Cruiser Destroyer Group Eight which commanded the Eisenhower Battle Group.
David’s shore assignments included instructor at Naval Nuclear Power School, Chief Staff Officer of Submarine Squadron SIX, Commanding Officer, Submarine Squadron Support Unit, Norfolk, staff of Commander Submarine Forces US Atlantic Fleet, and SUBLANT representative, Norfolk Naval Shipyard where he worked on the SSGN conversions of USS FLORDIA (SSGN 728) and USS GEORGIA (SSGN 729).
Following 26 years of active duty, David began his second career in public accounting in January 2006. His concentration is in the auditing of commercial and not-profit entities and the preparation of associated tax returns. He holds a Masters in Business Administration from Old Dominion University, Norfolk, VA and was licensed as a Certified Public Accountant in February 2008.
David has held leadership positions in a number of non-profit agencies on a voluntary basis. He is currently the Treasurer of the Metro Atlanta Council of the Navy League of the United States. He is also the Treasurer of “The Angel Connection, Inc.”, a non-profit that provides assistance to single mothers in Forsyth County, Georgia. He is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) and the Georgia Society of CPAs. David has previously served on his church finance committee and as the Treasurer of the Great Bridge High School Band Parents Association. He is an active member of First Baptist Church Cumming, Georgia.
David and his wife, Kalynn, live in Cumming, GA and have two adult daughters, Jennifer and Christy. Jennifer is married to MM2 Jonathan Byers, USN who is stationed on the USS HARRY S TRUMAN (CVN 75).
