Installation Dinner Date posted: 16-Jan-12

Representative Wilkinson briefed council members on issues before the current Georgia legislature session. He also spoke about several of his Naval assignments including media relations for President Clintons visit off shore Normandy to the USS GEORGE WASHINGTON (CV-43) for the 60th D-Day celebration in 1994.

Frank presented Representative Wilkinson with a copy of the History of the Navy League. Harley presented Frank with a large Navy Seal made of concrete to be placed in the garden of Franks South Carolina beach home. His relief CAPT Mifsud reported from Commanding Officer, USS Denver homeported in Sasebo, Japan. CDR David Neal, new Executive Officer, NRD Atlanta was also honored at the dinner held at Smyrna Olive Garden Restaurant. The Toys for Tots dinner replaced the councils' December Board meeting and featured a slide show of the Councils' 2011 highlights

 

     


Arlington National Cemetary Veterans Day Ceremony Date posted: 20-Nov-11

Veterans Day Parade and Freedom Ball Date posted: 17-Nov-11
The Georgia Veterans Day Parade Association Of Atlanta, Inc. presented its 30th Annual Veterans Day Parade November 12th.

Atlanta Metropolitan Council had a convertible in the Parade carrying Sea Cadet of the Year Cadet PO2 Ansley O'Dell from 2745th Construction BN, NSCC and Outstanding NJROTC Cadet of the year LCDR Stephen Sasscer from Allatoona High School leading the SEA Cadet Color Guard and combined Sea Cadet marching unit.

Cadets from three Atlanta area Naval Sea Cadet units 2745th, 233rd Construction Battalion and Pathfinders Excursion Squadron combined to make up the marching unit. The Color Guard was from 2745th Construction Battalion.

Lithonia High School NJROTC Unit  Lithonia was parade winner of "Best Marching Unit". Lithonia HS NJROTC is one of 44 Atlanta Council sponsored units.

The Freedom Ball Honored the Greatest Generation  Our World War II Veterans November 12th at the Georgia Aquarium. Atlanta Metro Council sponsored a table.

Grand Marshalls of the Parade and Keynote Speakers at the Ball were Jammie Madio and Ross McCall, lead actors of the HBO Series  Band of Brothers.

National Convention Oct 26-30 Chattanooga, TN Date posted: 02-Nov-11
At the end of the convention President Branch was relieved by Phillip L. Dunmire as the National President for the next two years. The convention included the usual committee meetings, The Sea Services Panel; Sea Services Luncheon with Keynote Speaker Admiral Jonathan Greenert, USN Chief of Naval Operations,; Wounded Warrior Reception.; Banquet with Keynote Speaker Congressman Chuck Fleischman (TN-3) and various other social events. The 2012 Convention will be June 20-24 at the Sheraton Waikiki, Honolulu, Hawaii

Atlanta Metropolitan Council was notified in August that we were the recipients of the 2010 Outstanding Council Award. Congratulations to all our officers, committee chairs and membership who contributed to this well deserved accolade. This year's award will be presented on Thursday, October 27th at the Navy League National Convention in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Only 11/2 hours away, Chattanooga offers all of our Atlanta Metro members an incredible opportunity to attend some of the exciting programs and activities on the convention schedule. 236th Navy Birthday Ball Date posted: 25-Oct-11
Navy tradition was observed as LSSR Taila Bobo, USN youngest attendee and and council member CDR Hugh Wheeler, USN (RET) the oldest cut the birthday cakes at the ball October 22. Several hundred attendees enjoyed the evening at the Atlanta Marriott Northeast at Galleria. The speaker was RADM Robert P. Wright, USN, Reserve Deputy Commander U. S. Fleet Forces Command located in Norfolk VA.

Navy Ball Chairman was LCDR Randy Cole, USN, Navy Ball Committee Chairman was YN1 (SW/AW) Arica Blake and Navy League Co-Chairman was Allen Legel. Committee members included 14 members of the Metro Atlanta First Class Petty Officer Association.

The Hill Grove High School NJROTC Color Guard presented and retired the colors. The program included remarks by CAPT Christopher Moore, USN Commanding Officer, NOSC and a POW/MIA observance

Rear Admiral Wright, a native of Boston, was awarded a Bachelor of Science degree in Earth Science from Framingham State College, and a masters degree in Space Systems Operations from the Naval Post Graduate School, Monterey, Calif. He was commissioned at Naval Air Station (NAS) Pensacola, Fla., in February 1978 and designated a naval aviator in September 1979. Wright reported directly to a fleet squadron, VFP-63, NAS Miramar, Calif., for RF-8G fleet training and deployment to the Persian Gulf aboard USS Independence (CV 62). In August 1984, he reported to VF-101, NAS Oceana, Va., for F-14 transition training. In March 1985 he reported to VF-102 for two deployments aboard USS America (CV 66) and one aboard USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71). He reported back to VF-101 in March 1987 for F-14 instructor duty and program development as the F-14 operational model manager. Wright left active service in March 1990 and affiliated with Reserve Fighter Squadron VF-1486 based at NAS Oceana. In April 1992, he began his affiliation with the Space & Network Warfare Program (SNWP) and assumed reserve commands at Naval Space Command and U.S. Space Command. As a U.S. Space Command liaison officer (LNO), he served in every regional theater and covered the active duty Space LNO position at U.S. Southern Command for the last 14 months of his assignment. In October 2002, Wright reported as Reserve chief of staff for Naval Network Operations Command and was nominated as director SNWP in October 2003. As director, he guided Reserve Component mergers transforming SNWP from a primary mission focus of Space/ISR towards the sole Navy Reserve entity representing a broad network-centric warfare focus. His merger and alignment efforts resulted in a program comprising 750+ Reservists and 26 Reserve units supporting U.S. Strategic Command, Naval Network Warfare Command, and the National Reconnaissance Office. In October 2005, Wright assumed command of U.S. Fleet Forces Command (USFF) Joint Task Force (JTF) Det. 100 and provided oversight in mission alignment of four USFF JTF units providing operational support to three combatant commanders. Wright mobilized with USFF JTF unit in September 2006 and served as director Strategic Communication, Combined Joint Task Force  Horn of Africa. Wright was selected for flag rank upon his return from Africa in February 2008 and reported to U.S. 2nd Fleet (C2F) as deputy commander. While at C2F, he provided flag oversight of the Navy Maritime Operations Center (MOC) Project Team in developing the concept and subsequently establishing a global network of MOCs. He also led a Reserve Component alignment of 300+ personnel which yielded a hybrid Navy Reserve model supporting the C2F Maritime Joint Task Force and the global MOCs.

In April 2010 he reported to USFF for assignment as Reserve deputy commander and chief of staff. IN September 2011 he was named Reserve deputy commander.

 



Great Georgia Air Show Date posted: 12-Oct-11
October's 2011 Great Georgia Air show honored the Naval Aviation Centennial, featuring several Navy historic aircraft and demonstrations by the F/A-18 Hornet. Atlanta Metropolitan Council President, Frank Campbell was the featured speaker in air show opening ceremonies. Naval Sea Cadets from the Pathfinders Squadron, Newnan, Georgia also assisted with air show security. The Pathfinders Squadron is under the direction of Commanding Officer and Council Director, LT Bob Wiley(NSCC).

WWII Presentation Date posted: 02-Oct-11
Atlanta Metropolitan Council members and guests heard a WWII Pacific Fleet, Fast Carrier Task Force Operations by Ray Williams September 27th.

Ray entered the Navy, as an Apprentice Seaman, immediately out of High School in May 1942. He survived Boot Camp at Newport, Rhode Island and was trained in Aviation Electronics in Corpus Christi, Texas. Ray served on the aircraft carrier USS Cowpens, CVL-25 and was promoted to AviatiCouncil President Frank Campbell (l) presents gift to Ray Williams (r) following his complete and interesting presentation. Ray entered the Navy, as an Apprentice Seaman, immediately out of High School in May 1942. He survived Boot Camp at Newport, Rhode Island and was trained in Aviation Electronics in Corpus Christi, Texas. on Chief Petty Officer on January 1, 1945 as his ship was engaged in the Philippine Island invasions, which included the Battle of Leyte Gulf. Recalled to active duty for the Korean War, he was commissioned as a Line Officer and served for two years as the Electronics Officer of an Aircraft Carrier operating off the West coast of Korea. From 1954, he served as an Air Intelligence Officer assigned to a Naval Air Reserve Wing Staff before retiring in 1965. He is retired from Lockheed Martin a Council Community Affiliate Member. The dinner was held at Smyrna American Legion Post 162.

USS John Towers (DDG-9) Reunion Date posted: 17-Sep-11
USS John Towers (DDG-9) reunion, Rome, Georgia commemorating 50th anniversary of USS Towers commissioning and 100 years of Naval Aviation. Admiral Towers, a Rome, Georgia native, is considered as the father of naval aviation and served as the Navy's Chief of Bureau of Aeronautics.

In honor of the Coast Guards 221st birthday August 4 Rear Admiral William D. Baumgartner, Commander 7th Coast Guard District, Miami was the speaker at the Council dinner August 9th.

The Admiral briefed Council members on Coast Guard Activities worldwide and specifics on the Seventh District which among other duties in 2010 saved 754 lives, assisted 9,624 people saved 21 million in property, interdicted $930 million in illegal narcotics, rescued 2,122 undocumented migrants and conducted 1,100 casualty investigations. Rear Admiral Baumgartner serves as Commander of the Seventh Coast Guard District headquartered in Miami, Florida. As District Commander, he is responsible for all Coast Guard operations in the Southeast United States and the Caribbean Basin including Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands and over 15,000 miles of coastline including nearby Lake Lanier and Lake Allatoona. In addition, the Seventh District shares operational borders with 34 Foreign Nations and Territories. Prior to assuming command of the Seventh District, Rear Admiral Baumgartner served as the Judge Advocate General and Chief Counsel of the United States Coast Guard from April 2006 to April 2010. He is a 1980 graduate of the Coast Guard Academy. He holds a Master of Business Administration degree from the University of New Orleans and a Juris Doctor degree, magna cum laude, from Harvard Law School where he also served as an editor on the Harvard Law Review.

Over 60 members and Coast Guard Auxiliary Officers from the metro Atlanta area attended the dinner at Smyrna Olive Garden.

Memorial Day Ceremony Date posted: 07-Jun-11
For many years Atlanta Metropolitan Council has placed a wreath at the Marietta National Cemetery on Memorial Day. (Photo 8) This year Vice President Legislative Affairs Don Giles, (R) and Director Capt Bob Wise, USN (Ret) (L) presented the Council wreath. Council photographer Danny Camp took photos. The ceremony started at noon May 31. Major General Raymond V. Mason, USA, Deputy Chief of Staff, G-4,U.S. Army Forces Command, Ft Mc Pherson, GA was the speaker. Governor Nathan Deal presented a proclamation .

The Marietta National Cemetery is canonized ground. Inside its storied gates are buried more than 10,000 veterans, spanning 23 states, from New York and Michigan to Alabama and Georgia. Men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in other wars also rest peacefully at the 139-year-old cemetery. For more than a half century now, a ceremony has occurred every Memorial Day at Marietta National Cemetery to honor all those who served and gave their life for our countrys freedom. It is a time to reflect on and honor those who stood heroically by their country during battle and who are today making the same unshakable commitment of valor in far away lands. Sponsored by the National Memorial Day Association of Georgia and The Avenue of Flags, this years event promises to once again stir emotions and teach young and old alike what the words duty, honor and country truly mean. With the help of the Boy Scouts of America, flags will be placed beside every grave at the cemetery before the official ceremony begins. The event will begin at noon on May 31th and will feature patriotic music, posting of the colors, prayers, a gun salute and inspiring speakers. All veterans, as well the general public, are invited to attend what was a meaningful and memorable ceremony.

ARMAC LUNCHEON MAY 23 Date posted: 26-May-11
The 59th annual Atlanta Regional Military Affairs Luncheon was held Monday May 23, 2011. Atlanta Council hosted two tables. Council Chaplain Wayne Radloff, his guests WW-II Veteran, and former Georgia State Senator Jim Tysinger, Seminary student, Jeramy Smith, soon to be commissioned as a Navy Chaplain, President Frank Campbell, Director RADM Casey Coane and VP Legislative Affairs Don Giles were among those attending.

U.S. Senator Saxby Chambliss was the speaker for the event. Council Director Captain Ted Daywalt, USNR (ret) is the Chairman, Atlanta Regional Military Affairs Council. The Atlanta Regional Military Affairs Council was created to foster partnerships, education and a strong relationship between the business and military communities in the Atlanta area.

The Cobb County Chamber of Commerce and Lockheed Martin Corporation were the major sponsors. Twenty-nine other corporations, Military Units and Service Organizations including Atlanta Metropolitan Council were table sponsors.

Atlanta Council had an exhibit to recruit new members.

Council VP Membership Denny Holmes, Lt. Rhonda "Smitty" Smith, NSCC and Council Photographer Danny Camp met at the Navy Operational Support Center Saturday May 21 to recruit active duty members to join the Navy League and/or volunteer to work with Sea Cadets. CDR G. Lee Elrod, USN, XO (left) and CAPT Christopher Moore. USN, CO {Right) in photo 1 met with Denny, Rhonda and Danny to arrange details. Holmes said LT Smith was a tremendous presence because of the interest about the Sea Cadet programs. She got a number of verbal volunteer commitments. Danny was the photographer and overall organizer. We received several verble commitments to join the council. We wont have an exact count until the applications are received.

18th annual Youth Banquet Date posted: 11-May-11
The Atlanta Metropolitan Council, Navy League of the United States held its 18th Annual Youth Awards Banquet May 5 and named Cadet LCDR Stephen Sasscer, Allatoona High School NJROTC the 2011 winner of the JROTC Award. C/LCDR Sasscer was selected from 47 nominees. The Council also named C/Petty Officer 3rd Class, NSCC Ansley Odell from 2745th Seabee Battalion, a student at Lassiter High School, for the Councils 11th Annual Sea Cadet award. C/LCDR Sasscer and PO3 Odell each received a $500 U.S Savings Bond. C/LTCOL Taylor Dedrick, Heritage High School MCJROTC and C/CDR Jared Loggins, McEachern High School NJROTC both received a $250 US Savings Bond for a runner-up tie in the JROTC competition. The following four Cadets received a $100 Bond for Honorable Mention:

C/GYSGT Brandon Jones, Lithia Springs MCJROTC C/LCDR Katherine Narvaez, Cross Keys NJROTC C/LCDR Hayley Camp, North Cobb NJROTC C/CAPT Chris House, Newton County MCJROTC

The JROTC awards were presented by Council President Frank Campbell. The Sea Cadet William T Schwendler Award for Excellence was presented by Campbell and William T. Schwendler, Jr. President Frank Campbell coordinated the dinner and was master of ceremonies.

The Sea Cadet competition had a tie for runner-up. C/CPO William Heinzel Pathfinders Squadron, Northgate High School and C/CPO Sean Purcell 233rd Construction BN, Tucker High School tied for runner-up and each received a $200 savings bond. C/PO3 Ashley Weifenbach, Columbus Ironclad Division East Coweta High School won a $100 savings bond for Honorable Mention.

The 7th Annual Jason E. Lawson Trophy for Outstanding Sea Cadet Unit 2011 was awarded to 2745th Seabee Battalion Commanded by LT Brian Fleming NSCC. The award is named forAW2 Lawson, USN, lost in a Helicopter accident in 2002. He was the son of council member Roz Coleman and member of NARS B-1 Squadron Sea Cadet Unit for three years where he was Chief Petty Officer. He was selected 1999 National Navy League Sea Cadet of the year.

The banquet speaker was Mr. Nicholas D. Snider (Nick) Founder and Chairman of the Board National Foundation of Patriotism. He is a retired Senior Vice President of United Parcel Service. Nick attended Roger Bacon High School in Cincinnati, Ohio and the Infantry School, FT Benning, Georgia where he served with the United States Army as a Commissioned Officer. He is a lifetime collector of patriotic artifacts and has authored two books on Patriotic Collecting, Sweetheart Jewelry and Collectables and Antique Sweetheart Jewelry. Nick is a longtime board member of the USO Council of Georgia, a member of the Museum Association of America and the recipient of several regional and national community service awards

The Metro Youth Awards program is one of many projects the Atlanta Council conducts for area young people and active and reserve duty personnel. This area boasts 44 high schools with Navy and Marine Corps JROTC units, and 7 Sea Cadet units, all of which were eligible for the awards. The Council has a separate program for the two NROTC units at Georgia Tech and Morehouse College. It also gives quarterly and annual awards to sailors at the Naval Operational Support Center (NOSC) Atlanta, the Navy Recruiting District of Atlanta, aboard the USS JIMMY CARTER (SSN-23) homeported in Bremerton, Washington and the USS GEORGIA (SSGN-729) homeported in Kings Bay, Georgia.

The Criteria for the Outstanding Metro JROTC Award is the Cadet will have served at least two years in the Navy/Marine Corps JROTC; must exhibit ethical and reliable leadership skills; must have served in a management position in his/her JROTC unit; should demonstrate a desire for advancement of both him/herself and his/her unit, and will have been nominated by the unit Senior Naval Science Instructor or Senior Marine Corps Science Instructor.

The Navy League Metro Sea Cadet of the Year, who receives the William T. Schwendler Award for Excellence, is expected to be in at least his/her second full year of service in the Naval Sea Cadet Corps, demonstrate the desire for personal excellence through taking advantage of education and training opportunities within and outside the Sea Cadet program, exemplify the reliability of character and quality of work essential to making the cadet a valuable member of any team, exhibit the courage and integrity required to be level-headed and fair in all dealings with other people; and demonstrate leadership skills in helping to guide and develop fellow cadets so that all have an opportunity to do their personal best and advance their unit. The award is in honor of William T. Schwendler, 1904-1978, an early aviation designer who made major contributions to the aerospace industry. Leroy R. Grumman, assisted by Mr. Schwendler and four other men, founded Grumman Aircraft Engineering Corporation in 1929. Mr. Schwendler had begun his aeronautics career as a member of the first class in aeronautical and mechanical engineering at New York University, graduating in 1924 at age 20.

The Atlanta Council is committed to support of the U.S. Navy, the U.S. Marine Corps, the U.S. Coast Guard, and the U.S. Merchant Marine in the Atlanta metropolitan region, specifically we support:

44 High School -NJROTC and MCJROTC units, 7 Naval Sea Cadet Units, and NROTC units at Georgia Tech and Morehouse College.

We also support USS Jimmy Carter (SSN-23), USS Georgia (SSGN-729), and various recognition programs for sailors at the Naval Recruiting District Atlanta, Navy Operations Support Center Atlanta, and Navy Support Activity.

Gainesville, Georgia NJROTC, another council sponsored unit, placed fourth in the Area competition. Union Grove High School NJROTC will represent Area TWELVE at the National Championships in Pensacola in April. This is the sixth trip to the National Drill Championships for Union Grove who recently won the Navy National Orienteering Championships in February and are competing this week in Anniston Alabama at the Inter-Service Rifle Championships.

Commanding Officer USS Jimmy Carter SSN-23 Presentation Date posted: 13-Sep-10

Commander Brian Davies, USN gave the Atlanta Metro Council a Submarine Force briefing September 13. He covered the capabilities of all U.S. submarines in the inventory and where they are homeported. He also discussed the submarine capabilities of all foreign countries. He answered many questions from the members.

The ship has an extra 100 feet section which carries an R& D Unit. LCDR Robert Hainline (USN) Undersea Research and Development {UR&D} Officer in Charge also made the trip The Jimmy Carter is the only ship with this configuration

President Frank Campbell presented CDR Davies with a copy of the History of the Navy League. CDR Davies and LCDR Hainline presented the council with command plaques. Frank also presented the all Navy guests with a USS JIMMY CARTER commissioning coin.

Mrs. Davies and 6 crewmembers accompanied him. CDR Davies and his crew members were in Atlanta for their annual briefing to President Jimmy Carter who served as a submarine officer after graduating from the Naval Academy.

The meeting was held in the NRD Conference room. A reception led the evening followed by the briefing and then the monthly council board meeting. CDR William Garren, USN, CO NRD Atlanta welcomed the guests and spoke about current recruiting issues.

The Atlanta Metropolitan Council sponsored the Carters commissioning ceremonies February 19, 2005 and reception adopted the ship. Pictures are on the bottom of the this page.

Mrs. Jeane Campbell and Mrs. Sherryl Giles coordinated the reception.

DON GILES GIVES FIRST CSOP PRESENTATION TO MARIETTA KIWANIS CLUB

Photo 1 Atlanta Metropolitan Council Vice President, Legislative Affairs and National Director Don Giles was the Guest Speaker at the Kiwanis Club of Marietta meeting on July 1, 2010, at the Hilton Marietta Hotel and Conference Center. The topic was "Protecting the Sea Lanes and America's Commerce." This was the first time the newly revised Navy League Community Service Organization Presentation has been presented to a public audience. About 125 attended. Depicted in the photo, Kiwanis member Scott Chadwick presented a book to Don Giles following the presentation. Seated on left is David Connell and on the immediate right of the podium is Kiwanis Club President, Victoria Turney. Atlanta Metropolitan Council members Chuck Mingonet, Bill Sidner, and Lamar Cheatham also attended the luncheon meeting.

USS JIMMY CARTER COMMISSIONING CEREMONY February 19, 2005, Groton CT The Atlanta Metropolitan Council played a major role in the events surrounding the Saturday, February 19th commissioning of the USS JIMMY CARTER SSN-23 in Groton, CN. The council coordinated a corporate and individual fund raising effort which produced $230,000 and then hosted the Commanding Officers Reception on Friday night, The Platform Briefing breakfast on Saturday morning, the post ceremony reception for over 2,500 and the crew party for the crew and their families.

In addition to the social events Atlanta Council presented the ship with the traditional silver service and plank owner plaques for every member of the crew and 20 of the Carter family.
